Do I need to know the password?

If the PDF asks for a password when you open it, yes — this tool removes the password, it does not guess it. PDFs that open freely but block printing, copying or editing can be unlocked without any password.

Which encryption types are supported?

All standard PDF passwords: 40-bit and 128-bit RC4, 128-bit AES and 256-bit AES (used by Acrobat and most modern apps). Certificate or DRM protection is not supported.
